Marva Garner Bywaters
Educator, Preacher, Ordained Elder
Dr. Bywaters attended Houston Public Schools, graduating with honors from Booker T. Washington High School. After high school, she entered Texas Southern University on a Child Development Scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Art. Dr. Bywaters later received a Master of Education from Texas Southern University. She also matriculated at Texas Women's University and the University of Houston where she received certification in Special Education. Dr. Bywaters dedicated 35 years of her life to the Houston Independent School District where she was a teacher trainer and supervisor.
Dr. Bywaters was an active member of the National Education Association and joined them in their efforts to integrate the governance bodies of the state and local associations. For several years, she served on the Executive Committees of the Houston State Teachers Association. She was appointed by the Governor to the Professional Competencies Commission of the Texas Education Agency where she served on the accrediation team.
In her thirst for knowledge, Dr. Bywaters enrolled in the Houston Graduate School of Theology and received a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry.
Until her death in 2006, Dr. Marva Bywaters advocated for young people to attain their post-high school education goals. The MGBMS Committee is committed to honor Dr. Bywater's advocacy.
